The Queen That Never Surrendered: Queen Nzinga

Edited by Tae Queen

Queen Nzinga Mbande was the monarch of the Mbundu people. Most famous for her resistance of Portuguese colonization and slave trade, she was known as a powerful military strategist who kept her people safe until her dying day.

One of her most famous encounters with the Portuguese was in 1622, when she met with Portuguese officials in Luanda to discuss a peace treaty. During this peace conference she established a line of trade with Portugal in hopes of securing weaponry. She also converted to Christianity to appease this connection, but Portugal was not satisfied with mere trade and desired African slaves. Nzinga, displeased with this deliberate breach of treaty, reached out to her brother, only to be saddened by his weakness on the matter. Her brother eventually committed suicide in 1626 leaving Nzinga as Queen of the Mbundu people.

Queen Nzinga took it upon herself to form an alliance with the Janga people by marrying their chief and organized an army. She also created a land for her people by conquering the kingdom of Matamba. This alliance ended in betrayal as the chief ended up attacking Matamba and her people.

Queen Nzinga’s brilliant military mind seized her chance to form an alliance with the Dutch as they fought with the Portuguese over their share of the slave trade in 1641.  In 1647, Queen Nzinga, with the assistance of the Dutch, defeated the Portuguese army. When the Portuguese defeated the Dutch army sending them packing from Central Africa, Queen Nzinga continued to battle the Portuguese until her dying day December 17, 1663.

NU Year, NU MESSAGE

I just keep coming and going like the soft whispers of wind in the night, but that’s because I’ve been so busy with all the projects I’ve got going on for myself, from working on SOUL Meets BODY to my own personal growth and development. I’m taking online courses, I’m deep in my art, deep in myself and speaking of which, I’d like to present to you my FIRST piece of 2016. With this “new year,” I share a “new message.” To be honest, this message isn’t new….but it’s new to ME simply because it no longer falls on my deaf ears. I hear it loud, clear and with a shifted and refreshed perspective…so it sounds and feels brand-new.

I call it: REGARDLESS

REGARDLESS-(WM)

A message to myself AND to others:

LOVE YOURSELF, REGARDLESS of how you look, what people do, think or say about you….including YOU.

Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy….and that’s not a good feeling at ALL. This is a reminder for me to love me and have my own back no matter WHAT.

I love myself, I nurture myself, I forgive myself, I heal myself.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a man, a woman, young, old, tall, short, natural hair or weaved/permed up, light skin or dark skin, heavy set or slim, WHATEVER STATE YOU’RE IN, YOU’RE FINE JUST THE WAY YOU ARE.

If you’re looking to make genuine improvements on yourself and your life, then look in the mirror and say, “I love myself. I am DEEPLY IN LOVE with myself. I mean it. I love me! I do WHAT I can, WHEN I can, HOW I can until more opportunities present themselves to me. I am ALWAYS alright.” Ase!

I’ve had such a wonderfully overwhelming response on social media and in person when I shared this, that it has prompted me to release prints! I really love and appreciate when my artwork can touch and inspire others so deeply. Things like this keep me happy and inspired to create even more for us.

If you’d like to begin (or continue) to INDULGE in self-love REGARDLESS of what anybody else around thinks, says or does, treat yourself  here!

Ability

For today’s entry, I’ll keep it short and simple. I’d like to share with you a sample of my WRITTEN Art. A poem, inspired by many things. I call it, “Ability.” Enjoy.

***

I can lie here and feel safe…and warm

I can fall into your arms and away

From the ways

Of this Twist’d world forever…

I can breathe in your precious,

Natural

Earthy

Spice of a Scent

Clinging to your Cinnamon Skin

And I can find myself…spiraling

Quickly out of CONTROL

Blissfully into Ordered Chaos

And

Chaotic Order…

I can feel the colors

Of our Mood

I can sense the burnt oranges,

the deep golds

the varying yellows…

I can FEEL the Vibrations of the

Traces of green coming my Way,

And straight into yours….

I can SEE with eyes wide shut

The Ascension of Two Spirits

Who shed their Two Bodies

Just to become One

In the Sun…

I can taste…taste…

The sweet blues of Serenity

The sweet blues of you and me

The gentle, delicious secrets

Of a bedroom at Twilight….

Oh yes, Blessed King…

I Vibe and I thrive

On it ALL…

I can prophesy the gliding

The smooth rotations

Of this fixation

From the mutual gravitation

Of SOUL/SOL

And SOUL/SOL…

Knows…

Than…

I/Eye…

Activation…fading quickly

Into a comfortable DARKNESS…

Break. Kiss. Fix’d.

Mmm….

I can…

I can…heal…

I can…pursue…

I can…BREATHE…

I can…Dream about you.

Art…IN ZEE KITCHEN!

Okay, so, as you already know, I am an Artist (or as I like to say HEARTist)! But what you may not know about me is how much I love FOOD! 😀 Another thing you definitely may not know about it me is that I love to COOK! Why do I mention cooking? Because as we all know, the preparation of food is an art form within itself–hence CULINARY ARTS!

Now, I’m no professional chef or anything and I don’t know many of the technical cooking terms, but I can tell you this–just like with my drawing, painting, creative writing, etc.–cooking is a fun experience where I learn more about myself. From the different properties of the foods I’m preparing (since I’m eating cleaner these days) to my own techniques, to the cooking process to what I like or dislike overall. I always like to go by feel, even when I sometimes follow a recipe I find online.

Creating dishes from scratch makes me feel so light, elated and free! Eating dishes prepared by your own loving hands and knowing EXACTLY what’s in the food really makes the nourishment of the body experience that much more meaningful. You can really tell the difference between eating out and eating in. 😉 Since I’ve been eating healthier (both for the benefit of myself and my loved ones), this contributes further to my happiness when I’m in the kitchen.

Of course, not ALL of my culinary creations go exactly as I hope they would but what I DID discover is that when I do the following things, it makes a big difference in how my dishes will turn out–and that’s DELICIOUS!

Energy  When I say “Energy” I mean this in two ways: One, it’s important to want to FEEL like preparing food (both raw AND cooked dishes). Trust me, there’s been MANY times when I’d go food shopping, come back and dance all around the kitchen as I neatly put things away and theeeeennn–I’ll cook an amazing meal the next day, then sporadically and then…well, the food ends up going bad because I don’t always feel like preparing food. So make sure you get all the right nutrients and Energy from the dishes you DO end up making, plus get your sleep so that you won’t feel so BLAH and reluctant when it comes to making meals. Two, it’s important to be aware of your FEELINGS/EMOTIONS when you prepare food. Yes, your mood, your Mindset and your intention DO in fact, influence how your food will taste and ultimately whoever eats it. You can tell when someone put LOVE and CARING into the preparation of his or her meal versus someone who decided to cook in a bad mood and threw things together in a pot. Ask me how I know. *side-eye*

Prep in ADVANCE Listen….did I mention that eating cleaner means longer prep periods? But one time I actually washed all of my green leafy veggies in advance, dried them off and store them safely in the refrigerator so that when it’s time for me to use them I don’t sit around waiting for them to soak in ACV & baking soda water. 😉

Go By FEEL I learned how to cook at a young age, but now sometimes it can be a little difficult since the things I learned how to cook were greasy, fatty and generally unhealthy. So basically it’s like I have to start over. But I have a good foundation and supportive people in my corner to help me avoid TOTALLY start from scratch in navigating these healthy foods in the kitchen. I just go with what I feel, and as I cook, I smell and sample my spices and dash them into my food and I taste the food as I prepare it, until it’s just where I like it to be then it’s served and gratefully devoured. 😉 (Ask my MAMA!) Just so you know, part of my going by feel, I don’t tend to measure my ingredients out, especially when I’m making things up. Going with the flow your Spirit is SO important in all things that I do, including COOKING.

Last, but certainly not least–

HAVE FUN! What’s the point of making good food if you’re not even enjoying it? I guess this ties back into the importance of Energy. I’ve ruined many a dish by cooking with a less-than-dazzling attitude, and I’m telling you when I get moody–you can tell by the dark storm clouds forming in the sky right above my house. SO! Make sure you have plenty of fun! You just ought to! You get to EAT what you make! You can usually find me flitting all around the kitchen, dancing to music, humming to myself or quietly focusing on how DELICIOUS whatever I’m making is going to taste! 😉

Now I’d like to share a recipe with you! Again, I don’t measure things out that much, so…take a peek at the recipe below and feel free to tweak it to your taste buds!

This is my NEWEST favorite dish: KNDelicious Greentain Pasta Heaven!

FOOD 1

Ooo, my camera game was on point that day! Ha, ha!

This delectable dish stars a few familiar veggie friends plus a Caribbean favorite on the side–PLANTAIN! ❤ This is my very own version of the popular ZUCCHINI PASTA dish! Right from the TOP OF THE DOME, Y’ALL! I…also don’t WRITE recipes down so…bear with me. This may run pretty long. Ready? Let’s get cooking!

Ingredients

3-4 medium-sized  zucchini

Fresh baby spinach leaves (the amount is up to you) ❤

Minced garlic (the amount is up to you) ❤

1 large onion (any type of onion is fine) ❤

A couple of dashes of sesame seeds

2 ripe plantain

Organic, Extra Virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil

Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute

Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning

(Pink Himalayan) Sea Salt

Bragg’s Liquid Aminos OR Organic Tamari Sauce (Optional)

Steps

  1. Soak your baby spinach in warm water with Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and aluminum-free baking soda to ensure that they are properly cleaned. Soak them for about 15-20 minutes or you can simply soak/wash your spinach in advance so that they’re ready to use.
  2. Peel and chop (or dice??) the onion.
  3. In a small skillet, take about two tablespoons of coconut oil, tilt the pan to make sure the surface is fully covered and heat it up over a low flame. Once heated, add the onions and spread them all around in the oil to ensure space for all the onion to cook evenly. Keep the flame low. Check and stir periodically.
  4. Wash the zucchini and with a Vegetti or similar tool, slice the zucchini into pasta strands. (Unless your veggies are CERTIFIED ORGANIC and you know this for sure, I would avoid using the skin of the zucchini as much as possible). You also want to make sure the zucchini isn’t too wide in circumference or else it WON’T fit into the Vegetti. If you don’t want your noodle strands to extend all the way into forever, cut the pile of noodles a couple of times.
  5. Put your zucchini pasta aside in a bowl then peel and slice your plantain into medium-width slices. Not too thin, not too thick.
  6. Once the onion starts to soften, add your minced garlic (I love my garlic so I use quite a bit!), stir it into the onion and turn the flame up just a PINCH and continue to cook. This is like a semi-caramelizing process. I say “semi-” because I don’t do the complete caramelizing process. You can do it if you have extra time on your hands though. 😉
  7. DANCE AROUND THE KITCHEN TO “7/11!” as you–
  8. Drain the spinach and squeeze any excess water from the leaves. Keep this in the bowl.
  9. Continue to cook the onion and garlic until it starts to brown a little. Remove all the onion-garlic mix from the pan and set aside in a small bowl.
  10. In the same skillet, pour a little more coconut oil and heat it over medium flame. Add the zucchini and stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes (only because I don’t want to cook all the nutrients out of the veggie). Toss the onion-garlic mix back into the skillet with the zucchini and start adding your spices and a few squirts of Liquid Aminos (add until it’s to your liking).
  11. Turn the heat back down to low and add the baby spinach and stir everything together for about 15 seconds (you don’t want to kill the veggies!)
  12. Turn off the flame, cover the skillet and move it aside.

NEXT-PLANTAIN!

  1. In a clean, large skillet, pour a thin layer of coconut oil.
  2. Heat the oil over medium flame.
  3. Once the oil is heated, GENTLY place the slices of plantain into the skillet, spread apart to make sure all slices are lying flat in the oil.
  4. Cook on one side until slightly crisp or brown; flip slices over.
  5. Repeat flipping the slices over every few minutes or so until both sides are thoroughly brown.
  6. Remove from heat.
  7. (Optional) Top your slices of plantain with a gentle sprinkle of organic coconut sugar. 😉 ❤

Grab a plate, pile upon your plate, sprinkle some sesame seeds on top of your pasta then Voilà! Share with your family too! ENJOY! 😉

Live and Twirl, Pretty Girl!

What’s up, world?! I’m back, I’m alive and I’m feeling BETTER THAN EVER! So much has happened since the last time I posted (both good and bad), but I’m going to share a generous piece of my experiences with you. It’s quite a read so get ready. 😉 A huge piece is the fact that I celebrated another year of life on Friday, July 31st, 2015 (and that entire weekend!), but I specifically want to share with you the very end of my birthday weekend.

GEDC3952 GEDC3998

Why…?

Because one of the greatest things that’s EVER happened to me to DATE has FINALLY come true! ❤ ❤ ❤ But let me run it back real quick. 😉

So the day before my birthday, I actually took all my time to pamper and prepare myself for the day ahead. At that time, I was also attempting to wean myself off of social media, so I hadn’t been logging into Instagram or Facebook for some days. Well, I just happened to take a peek at my Instagram and I noticed that an old poet homie of mine tagged me in a post. I clicked on it and…lo and behold….I saw that…MARKUS PRIME WAS COMING TO PHILLY!!!! (One thing you should know about me is that Markus Prime is one of my FAVORITE VISUAL ARTISTS OF ALL TIME! I’ve been following and admiring his work on Instagram for over two years! If you don’t know about him, then you’re missing out big time!) Markus was due to come to that Sunday to live paint at an event called “PAIN’T NO LOVE”. NOBODY could tell me that this wasn’t the most perfect way to top off my entire weekend! I bought my ticket and a new outfit on Saturday and anxiously awaited Sunday.

Sunday finally came.

According to the online EventBrite info and my printed ticket, the event was supposed to be from 4 p. m. until 10 p. m. at a place called ‘The LOOM.’ I saw the address was on Amber Street, and even though it was only one short bus ride away I’d never heard of this place before. So I followed my Google Maps directions and  when I walked down Amber Street only a little past 3 p. m., I was INSTANTLY confused. The buildings I walked past looked random and abandoned, like NO type of event WOULD be or SHOULD be happening here. A few moments passed when I spotted two Black women who were on the other side of the street staring up at another building, looking as confused as I felt. They had a look about them–natural hair, vibrant colors, pretty skin, interesting makeup–they LOOKED like they were here for the event too.

So I called out to them, “Excuse me!”

They turned around. I said, “Are y’all looking for The LOOM?”

“Yes.” They crossed the street to where I was standing. As it turns out, these two women were from New Jersey and they were there for Markus Prime, too. We ended up having a LONG bout of confusion as far as the ADDRESS and TIME went because my ticket said the event was at 3237 Amber Street-SOUTH BUILDING from 4 p. m. until 10 p. m. But one of the women had her online EventBrite info on her phone which said the event was at 3245-SOUTH BUILDING at 2 p. m. until–?? BUT the 3245 address was for the NORTH BUILDING of The Loom. The doors of both buildings were locked.

As the clocked ticked closer to 4, we eventually got into the SOUTH BUILDING where we tiptoed and crept all around the 2nd and 4th floors looking for Markus and Ivben Taqiy (the Philly-based artist who I found out was co-hosting) since we were told by someone who runs a clay sculpting class in the building that events are usually held on the 2nd and 4th floors, but to no avail!

I checked Markus’ Instagram and saw no new posts. Taqiy’s Instagram ended up having a low-key post saying that the time CHANGED to 6 o’clock! WHAT?! It was only a little after 4 at that point! So the two women from Jersey got annoyed, wished me good luck on finding the right place and left. So there I was, alone and feeling foolish, my heart was slowly breaking. I was standing outside again baking in the Sun in my new outfit, heels that were already starting to hurt my feet, and with nowhere to go. I was pretty certain that if I was to go home at that point to wait until later, I probably wouldn’t have come back. Luckily, I’d met a man who came up to the building where I was standing outside of looking silly and he helped me a little. There wasn’t much he could do because he didn’t know anything about the event but he gave me some useful information about The LOOM and he was an artist himself! So after talking for a few minutes we added each other on Facebook and I’m happy to have another fellow artist as a new connection! He didn’t stay long, but he did wish me luck on getting where I needed to go.

A few minutes later, these two other nice women came up and they too were looking for “P’AINT NO LOVE.” I ended up telling them everything that happened so far and I stuck with them. After much turmoil in the Sunlight and the horrible heat, the three of us went back across the street to the NORTH BUILDING because I Googled “Ivben Studio” which I saw in Ivben Taqiy’s Instagram post and the address came up as 3245 Amber Street–the NORTH BUILDING. On the outside of the building there was one of those speaker dial box things (like the ones for apartment buildings to dial specific tenants). Something told me to scroll through the names until I found Ivben. I found him and dialed him. He answered and said that he was on his way there and we hung up. Problem solved, right?

Wrong.

The two women and I chatted lightly as we stood and waited, but when Ivben took too long to come down, we called back on the dial box. To our absolute ANNOYANCE, the buzz box thing didn’t dial Ivben Taqiy from INSIDE the damn building–it called his CELL PHONE and he wasn’t even there at all! He meant that he was on his way to the place! Ugh! So eventually, the three of us got into the NORTH BUILDING where we walked all around the place for at LEAST a half hour. We were confused, hot, sweaty and creeped out. Inside and upstairs was nothing but a bunch of maze-like, dead-end hallways; locked doors; old, creaky wooden floors; extremely chipping paint and dusty, dirty windows. HELL. NO. Once again, this LOOM place didn’t look like ANY type of event should be happening there. If anything, it looked like it was due for renovation or demolition!

I asked if they wanted to just go back downstairs and outside to see what was going on, so we got back on the creepy elevator and went back down. When we got to the door, I hesitated and said, “Yo, are you sure you wanna let this door close? If we can’t get in over there [SOUTH BUILDING]–it’s too hot to be stuck in the Sun again!” So one of the women asked if there was anything to prop the door open. I spotted an empty beer box and put it in the door as she bounded away to check the side door of the SOUTH BUILDING, and sure enough, it was open!

Long story short(er. Kind of.), Taqiy’s wife, Margy, was sent over to the place because he told her that people showed up thinking the event was still at 4. There were a few others who were waiting at the door too but we got in the building and were taken upstairs to the right studio. FINALLY, we were in the right place! So while Margy and her mini-crew were scrambling to set things up, everyone else just drifted around the studio. (Mind you, THIS part of the building looked MUCH better than what I’d seen so far. What a relief!)

I was on EDGE the ENTIRE TIME! I plugged my phone up to charge in the corner and I went around and took multiple pictures of the artwork hanging on the walls. My nerves made me walk around and take pictures of the artwork over and over and OVER again. Anyway, I sat for about twenty minutes, miserable and sweaty and nervous. It was hot as hell in there, and there was an air conditioner that didn’t even work and only one small gray oscillating fan that was in front of the studio next to the wall with Markus and Taqiy’s mural they were working on so far.

Eventually, my sister Mel called me to see how everything was going and told her all the nonsense that happened so far.

WHAAAAT??” she shrilled in my ear. YES. Well, while I was on the phone with her, guess who came sweeping through the door with a group of women around him?

YES LAWD…it was MARKUS PRIME.

My heart DROPPED and STOPPED.

I instantly snapped my head back towards my phone, away from everyone, and mumbled all in one breath to Mel, “Ohmygodohmygod!he’shere!MarkusPrimeishere!hejustwalkedthroughthedoorhe’sherehe’shereohmygodohmygodOHMYGODwhatamIgonnado?he’shere!OhmygodohmygodohmyGOD!”

On and on I went. Mel, who for some reason thought I knew Markus personally told me to just go up to him and talk to him. HELL NO! So, I spent ten minutes or so peeking over my shoulder to look at Markus make his way around the room, setting up, getting settled in, etc. when I saw a woman go up to him. Thank GOD, she broke the ice. I was NOT about to be the first one to talk to him! (Scaredy cat Leo woman. I be’s that. Ha, ha!) Happily I could see that she was nervous too! I was glad to not be the only one to be in my feelings over meeting Markus! 🙂 I got off the phone with my sister and kind of crept up to the side of Markus and the woman once I thought their conversation was coming to an end. Finally, when she walked away, Markus turned to look at me and I SWEAR, I FROZE!

He had stepped forward slightly with his arms open to give me a hug, but because I froze in place, he froze too slightly confused. His face expression was like, “Are YOU alright?!” Ha, ha! But the one thing that had me FLOORED was the fact that he RECOGNIZED ME! ❤ ❤ ❤  When we went to hug he was like, “SOULar…?”

YEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!! And I flew into his arms! Ha, ha, ha! ❤ ❤ ❤ I hugged him only to find that my legs were TREMBLING-I was a mess! It took everything out of me to NOT scream in his face and melt into a puddle of fangirl wonder at his feet. But yo….from that point forward, it was MAGIC!

I told Markus how much I really love and appreciate his art, his message to Black people, especially Black WOMEN, and I told him (to his amusement) how this was my birthday weekend and I was about to “REARRANGE the sh*t out of my birthday” when I found out he was coming! It was amazing! Even though Markus had to keep running off to finish setting up, talk to other people, etc…I still got to talk to him a LOT through out the event. I even gave him a present I  put together of some of my artwork (plus a bonus gift drawing of my original character Nahiema and Goku from Dragon Ball meeting for the first time that I drew last year some time). During the night, I was able to sit and talk to him some more and show him a sample portfolio of my artwork (which I showed to others at the party too. They all loved my work–I was so happy at such a positive response I got). Markus enjoyed all my artwork and he said he appreciated me and all my support. THIS was the HIGHLIGHT of my life thus far! Ha, ha! I FINALLY met Markus Prime, I met other amazing people who I took pictures with, talked to and exchanged contact information with them AND I even bought one of his ORIGINAL drawings he had for sale there. I POUNCED and claimed this one–

Me, Markus, and my bonus drawing I gave to him.

Me, Markus, and his original drawing I proudly purchased. SUPPORTING MY OWN!

Despite the dramatic mix-up before the event, I had a fantastic time! It was totally worth it! I will NEVER forget this night. There was even a brief discussion at near the end of the event, where Markus and Taqiy explained why they chose the theme “P’AINT NO LOVE” and why they decided to paint the mural that they’d painted, which was of Garnet from Steven Universe knocking a cop depicted as a pig out! A tooth was flying out his mouth and everything! next to the amazing, colorful, powerful scene was a graffiti-style writing which said “BLACK LIVES MATTER.” The message couldn’t have been any clearer than that. And they talked about things like how to deal with the police to how we as a people have the power to use our gifts and talents to change the world in so many different ways. They pointed out how right then and there the room was full of artists, photographers, videographers, etc. so there’s no way or reason why we can’t get things moving. It was inspiring to say the least.

GEDC4124

And that’s about it. THIS was one of the MANY things I’ve been up to in my absence, but I can assure you–it’s all up from here! I’m still growing and evolving and in the words of my beloved angel, Aaliyah, “You are livin’ and twirlin’, you know that?” ❤

YES, I KNOW! 😉

It feels good to be back for you!

Transformations

Last night, I watched Left Eye’s (from the successful 90’s R&B group, TLC) documentary for the first time EVER called “Last Days of Left Eye.” Yes, I know I’m years late, but the way I got to watch this in the first place was from what I call my YouTube Adventures. You know how you go on YouTube say, at 6 p.m. looking for something like maybe a tutorial for a Bantu knot-out but next thing you know, it 3 o’clock in the morning and now you’re watching Divine Nine strolling or a basket full of meowing little kittens? Yeah, it’s like that.

It all started with me listening to Aaliyah’s “Enough Said” (the fan-made SOLO version, because Drake is a pain in the ass to listen to), then I looked up “Drake on Aaliyah,” and a video popped up where Drake talks about how Aaliyah influenced his life and music. Under “Related Videos,” I saw a video that was titled, “Left Eye talks about Aaliyah’s Death.” So I watched that, then again, under “Related Videos” I spotted “Last Days of Left Eye.” THAT’S how this happened.

I was lured in by a certain curiosity about what this documentary could possibly contain. I mean, yeah I knew about TLC, listened to their music a little growing up, but I wasn’t a hard core fan. That’s why until last night, the only things that I was left “knowing” about Left Eye was that she was “a crazy so-and-so who burned down her boyfriend’s house.” But how very wrong I was, and I realized this as I watched the documentary. I learned so MUCH about Left Eye that I would have NEVER thought to associate with her.

tlc-900-600

Astrology! Numerology! Yoga! Herbs! Raw cleanses! Vegan/vegetarianism! What?! I was in TEARS by the time I got to the end of the video, then I was inspired to write about THIS today: Why do artists (any form of art creators) seem to pass away AS SOON AS they begin to undergo a major transformation bringing them closer to their higher selves? Why do they pass away AS SOON AS they’re about to cross over and take on a MAJOR POSITIVE CHANGE or MOVE in their lives? Left Eye. Aaliyah. Michael Jackson. Whitney Houston. The list goes on and on and on.

AA29

Aaliyah, a superstar, teenage sensation who blossomed into a beautiful young woman that stayed true to herself, her values, her image, a role model who never allowed herself to be consumed by the happenings around her…she already had the music game on lock, danced, modeled and THEN she hit us all with her ACTING! Aaliyah was slated to star in so many upcoming film projects, was taking more control of the creation of her music, wanted to start writing her songs, showed us her growth over the years and then….the plane crash.

lisa-left-eye-lopes

Left Eye, the zany, spunky outspoken member of TLC, she had endured so much in her life, ESPECIALLY once she became famous…after all the ups and downs with the group and her personal life, she broke away, worked on HERSELF (Know Thyself, Heal Thyself, Love Thyself, Be Thyself) and she was ready to release some solo projects, manage a new girl group called Egypt, help the children of Honduras (the country where she found her solace) and then…the car crash.

superb-michael-jackson-15842058-1960-1333black

Michael Jackson, in show business since he was five-years-old, he grew up in a tight-knit, but strict family, he was taunted and teased by family and strangers alike, but he overcame ALL obstacles and went on to become The King of Pop and the GREATEST ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME. After all the disgrace and attempts to tarnish his name and legacy, Michael wanted to leave the country and retire from tours, etc. and pursue films and other projects but Michael was going to come back to serve the world that famous Moonwalk ONE LAST TIME and then…the murder (say what you want, that man, my Angel, was MURDERED).

Whitney Houston, beautiful pop sensation of the 80s and 90s with a HUGE, POWERFUL voice that stirred your heart, soul, EVERYTHING, who also overcame obstacles of drug abuse, media ridicule, dysfunctional relationship, etc…she was gearing up for the best comeback ever and then….the drowning.

My mind is sent REELING every time I sit and think about the way these talented beings left this world and the TIMING of it all. I know we say, “Everything happens for a reason,” “Destiny and Fate are already written” blah, blah, blah…but for people like THEM, there is no understanding. If we are all Spirits sent here in Human form on a mission to complete and a purpose to fulfill, why then are these people taken away at what seems to be only their beginning?

It makes me think about myself as an artist, as a Creatress …as a Spirit inhabiting this Human body for a certain amount of time. What will my legacy be? Will I have fulfilled my purpose before I go? Will my life be cut short?

Have you ever felt this way?

Art Gallery Hoppin’!: UPDATE

As Mercury Retrograde finally draws to an end this time around, allow me to give you a little update since my last entry

I finally went to one of the art exhibitions on my list two weeks ago. Not to mention all of the other art things all up in my mix! Check it out! 😉

Sometimes in life, you just have to close the door and leave all the MADNESS of the world OUTSIDE. That’s the case with me right now. As you may or may not know, we are currently going through another Mercury Retrograde cycle that started on the 21st, so therefore things seem to be slowing down, going wrong, and driving us all crazy!

Well for me…YES, this definitely is the case! Even though there was also a beautiful NEW MOON that just passed on the 20th, I can still feel the effects of Mercury Retrograde FULL-BLAST! The crazy thing is, I was preparing for it! I was even pointing the approaching retrograde out to people (who are into Astrology, that is) and it STILL snuck up on me–within HOURS of Mercury going retrograde! It was insane! I can’t believe that after all the preparing and bracing myself…I STILL fell into the trap of the miscommunication, the feeling the need to snatch people’s faces and whatnot! 😮

Well, with all that being said…I just want to quietly reflect right here on the wonderful day I’ve had and just tell you how I’m going about pulling myself out of the NEGATIVE influence of this Mercury Retrograde (because if you read the Mercury Retrograde article I linked above, you’ll also see that there’s a POSITIVE side to it).
